Surfing Maldives - Maldives Surf Vacations

Surfing in The Maldives

The Maldives (The Pearls of the Indian Ocean) are an Indian Ocean nation made up of a group of 26 atolls and over 1000 islets of turquoise lagoons, palm trees, pure white beaches and excellent reef passes come together to create a dream surfing + relaxation destination. For a long time the Maldive Islands were missed by the mapmakers. The Maldive capital city Male, pirches atop its small island and is a unique city. Amazingly, almost 2 thirds of Maldivians live in Male. The Maldives are located around 430 miles SW of Sri Lanka and are ideally positioned to intercept open ocean swells on its many atoll reefs.

Surfing in The Maldives

The Maldives generally offer surfers perfection. Small (around 4ft), clean right-hand reef breaks are the typical wave you will surf in the Maldives. The best time in the year to go for a surf holiday to The Maldives to get the calm winds and strong swells is between April - September. As you can see from the map above, the best Maldivian surf spots you won't want to miss are Honkey's, Sultan's and Pasta Point. These Maldivian surf reefs are clumped in the same vicinity so try and choose a resort hotel closeby. Most Maldivian hotel resorts will boat you out to the surf if needed.

There are around 40 atolls and islands which are solely occupied by Maldivian hotel resorts. If you intend on surfing in The Maldives you would be best advised to stay in a hotel resort close or on the island of the waves that you intend to surf.

The Maldive Islands sit right almost on the equator and so the climate is highly favourable to all visitors and surfers - enjoying high humidity and constant 77-86°F (25-30°C) year round. Water temperatures are equally balmy year round 77-80°F (25-27°C.

Health in The Maldives

Having immunisation against typhoid, hepatitis A and polio is recommended for your trip to the Maldives. Remember, because of the high humidity and air temperatures you should take precautions to avoid sunburn and dehydration especially if you're in surfing for hours on end.

Hospital care in the Maldives is good and you'll have to get to the capital city Malé for the private hospital. For less urgent medical incidents Maldivian resort hotel islands can administer first aid. Food and water on the resort island hotels are generally considered risk free. As with any surf vacation you should take out travel insurance.
