The Pass Australia Surf Travel Guide

The Pass Byron Bay Australia

The Pass is a 300m wally, hollow wave that ropes it's way down the headland which is the most easterly point in Australia. The rip is very strong. Crowding is major problem though for the Pass as it is right in the middle of a busy tourist/surfer resort. If you can get a wave you will love it! This is where Top 44 surfer Danny Wills honed his skills and still calls home.

  • Climate: Sub-Tropical about 300 days sunshine per year
  • Average Air Temps: Summer 68-95°F (20-35°C) Winter 50-77°F (10-25°C)
  • Average Water Temps: 65 – 75°F (18 – 23°C)
  • Best Surf: January - July
  • Surfboards: Full Quiver (mostly just shortboard)
  • Wetsuits: boardshorts/springy OCT - APRIL; steamer in winter

While you are in the area you should consider travelling up to Coolangatta to surf the Superbank, or a little further south to Lennox Head. Alternatively, you can fly out from Coolangatta and taking a flight down to Melbourne to surf Bells Beach or over to Perth in West Australia to have a crack at Margaret River.
