The Alley Currumbin Australia Surf Travel Guide

The Alley, Currumbin, Gold Coast Australia

The Alley at Currumbin is a reeling, sandy/rock bottom right hand point that works on all tides. When its really working from 4ft-12ft surfers can get rides up to 300m long before getting out and running up the beach and into the lineup again. The wave has varying sections, but the take off area is the hollowest.

The Alley is very consistent and like Superbank and Duranbah there can be crowds and aggro can be a problem. If you go round the back of the point you can escape the crowds and score some peaky quality waves. Like the rest of the 'coast with the most' (Gold Coast) the Alley breaks best in the cyclone season (January - April) but you can surf it all year round.

  • Climate: Sub-Tropical 300 days of sunshine per year
  • Average Air Temps: Summer 66-83°F (19-29°C) Winter 48-69°F (9-21°C)
  • Average Water Temps: 65 – 80°F (18 – 27°C)
  • Best Surf: January - April (Cyclone Season)
  • Surfboards: Full Quiver (mostly just shortboard)
  • Wetsuits: boardshorts/springy OCT - APRIL; steamer in winter

While you are in the area you should consider surfing the Superbank and Duranbah before travelling down to Byron Bay to surf The Pass, or a further hour south to Lennox Head. Alternatively you can fly out from Coolangatta and taking a flight down to Melbourne to surf Bells Beach or over to Perth in West Australia to have a crack at Margaret River.
