Stradbroke Island Australia Surf Travel Guide

Stradbroke Island Gold Coast Australia

Stradbroke Island (otherwise called Straddies) is an island just north of the Gold Coast and gets brilliant surf. Take the ferry over to surf the 30km of perfect sandy a-frame peaks.

Although it gets smaller the further you move away from the main beach headland. Even though its so far away from built up areas, loads of surfers go here to escape the crowding on the Goldie but make another crowd on Straddie. Choose your own peak to surf and respect the locals.

Straddie starts to break at about 2ft and can hold swell of up to 10ft and works on any tides. Straddie is a very consistent place to surf 150 days per year, that works out to be nearly every other day. This stretch of coastline is “surf rich” and favours a SE swell with SW-W winds and can usually be a foot or so bigger than the rest of the Gold Coast.

  • Climate: Sub-Tropical 300 days of sunshine per year
  • Average Air Temps: Summer 66-83°F (19-29°C) Winter 48-69°F (9-21°C)
  • Average Water Temps: 65 – 80°F (18 – 27°C)
  • Best Surf: January - April (Cyclone Season)
  • Surfboards: Full Quiver (mostly just shortboard)
  • Wetsuits: boardshorts/springy OCT - APRIL; steamer in winter

While you are in the area you should consider surfing the The Alley, Superbank and Duranbah before travelling down to Byron Bay to surf The Pass, or a further hour south to Lennox Head. Alternatively you can fly out from Coolangatta and taking a flight down to Melbourne to surf Bells Beach or over to Perth in West Australia to have a crack at Margaret River.
