Noosa Heads Australia Surf Travel Guide

Noosa Heads Qld Australia

Noosa Heads on Queensland's Sunshine Coast offers up some incredible surfing when the right swell arrives. Noosa Heads is split up into a series 5 separate right hand surf spots; Granite Bay, Ti-Tree, National Park, Johnsons and First Point.

The swell needs to be East/North East and any wind from North will spoil the long looping right handers! Surfing at Noosa Heads are somewhat fickle so for a more consistent wave head round to Noosa's Sunshine Beach.

The town of Noosa itself is a very plush town, very pictureque and clean too. It gets very busy in tourist season (Dec - Feb) and its the last seaside stop for many backpackers before they head inland to the highway en route into tropical Queensland's Townville, Whitsunday Islands and Cairns.

  • Climate: Sub-Tropical 300 days of sunshine per year
  • Average Air Temps: Summer 66-83°F (19-29°C) Winter 48-69°F (9-21°C)
  • Average Water Temps: 65 – 80°F (18 – 27°C)
  • Best Surf: January - April (Cyclone Season)
  • Surfboards: Full Quiver (mostly just shortboard)
  • Wetsuits: boardshorts/springy OCT - APRIL; steamer in winter

While you are in the area you should consider surfing Caloundra or head south past Brisbane onto the Gold Coast to surf the famous Superbank and Duranbah before travelling further down to Byron Bay to surf The Pass. Alternatively you can fly out from Coolangatta or Brisbane and take a flight down to Melbourne to surf Bells Beach or over to Perth in West Australia to have a crack at Margaret River.
