Kirra Australia Surf Travel Guide

Kirra Gold Coast Australia

Kirra surf spot is currently covered by 1000's of tonnes of sand... the same sand that caused the Superbank to form around 2002 when sand pumped from the nearby Tweed Rivermouth started filling in the gaps between the 5 different breaks of Snapper Rocks, Rainbow bay, Greenmount, Coolangatta beach and Kirra to form one long sand bank.

You can still get waves at Kirra - sections of good waves can be surfed when the swell is 4ft+. Guys do tow in surfing here quite often, using the speed of the jet-ski to speed through those fast peeling right-hand waves. However, they just aren't close to the perfection that they used to be. Swell is consistent here on the Gold Coast and the water is warm!

  • Climate: Sub-Tropical 300 days of sunshine per year
  • Average Air Temps: Summer 66-83°F (19-29°C) Winter 48-69°F (9-21°C)
  • Average Water Temps: 65 – 80°F (18 – 27°C)
  • Best Surf: January - April (Cyclone Season)
  • Surfboards: Full Quiver (mostly just shortboard)
  • Wetsuits: boardshorts/springy OCT - APRIL; steamer in winter

While you are in the area you should consider travelling down to Byron Bay to surf The Pass, or a further hour south to Lennox Head. Alternatively you can fly out from Coolangatta and taking a flight down to Melbourne to surf Bells Beach or over to Perth in West Australia to have a crack at Margaret River.
