Cabarita Australia Surf Travel Guide

Cabarita, NSW, Australia

Cabarita is a regional classic wave that is a righthand point break set-up that dishes up powerful 300m+ rights on its day. Its proximity to the Gold Coast and beautiful scenery make it a popular beach and headland for surfers and all beachgoers to visit on those balmy summer days but it doesn't usually suffer crowding.

Cabarita works on almost any tide and any swell so it is a very versitile spot and if those North Easternly onshores come through you can nip round the headland to the backbeach which offer excellent, hollow peaks on its day.

Cabarita beach and point isn't a perfect shape like Superbank but it is a good alternative to the likes of Duranbah and the Superbank on certain days when both breaks may be working but the Gold Coast crowds are getting you down.

  • Climate: Sub-Tropical 300 days of sunshine per year
  • Average Air Temps: Summer 66-83°F (19-29°C) Winter 48-69°F (9-21°C)
  • Average Water Temps: 65 – 80°F (18 – 27°C)
  • Best Surf: December - April (Cyclone Season)
  • Surfboards: Full Quiver (mostly just shortboard)
  • Wetsuits: boardshorts/springy OCT - APRIL; steamer in winter

While you are in the area you should consider surfing the Superbank, or The Alley Currumbin, Burleigh Heads or Stradbroke Island. Alternatively, you can fly out from Coolangatta and taking a flight down to Melbourne to surf Bells Beach or over to Perth in West Australia to have a crack at Margaret River.
