Surfing in Australia
Aussies love all sport and surfers love this place - surfing has been enjoyed in Australia since 1914 when Olympic swimmer Duke Paoa Kahanamoku brought his surfboard to Australia and surfed the waves. Surfing really took off in the sixties and has never dropped out of popularity since.
Surfers can enjoy waves in every state of Australia except Canberra (ACT) and Northern Territory (NT). So you can score surf from the fridgid waters of Tasmania (TAS) to the temperate climate of Victoria (VIC), to the arid, remote coast of South Australia (SA), across to West Australia (WA) and New South Wales (NSW) all the way up into tropical Queensland (QLD). Surfing has 4 main epi-centres in Australia near or in populated pockets such as Sydney Northern Beaches, the Gold Coast on the east coast, the Torquay/Bells Beach area down in Victoria and Margaret River in WA.
Australia has produced many surfing legends and world champion surfers: Rabbit Bartholomew, Wayne Lynch, Damian Hardman, Barton Lynch, Occy, Layne Beachley, Dean Morrison, Taj Burrow, Mick Fanning and Joel Parkinson are names you should instantly know. Interesting, NSW has produced the most amount of surf stars.

Weather in Australia
The weather in Australia ranges from cool, fresh and dry in the winter to hot, sticky and sunny in the summer with most days above 30°C (86°F). However, it does rain from quite frequently. For instance, along the East Coast of Australia, from December until the end of Febuary, heat and humidity build up for days on end before a thunderstorm and late afternoon rains cool temperatures down into the mid 20°C's (around 77°F). It pays to be caution in the Australian climate. So take care when out in the summer sunshine by applying SPF40+, drinking plenty of water and by wearing a hat, a loose tshirt and boardies because the UV ratings are very high and sunburn is nigh on unescapeable. Even the swarthiest of skin complexion will burn under the fierce Australian sunshine.

As with anywhere, avoid travelling alone (especially girls), don't leave valuables left unattended on beaches.
Apart from the usual pitfalls of traveling, Australia is home to scores of wildlife that can literally kill you - crocidiles in Far North Queensland, poisonous snakes and spiders across most of Australia, plus great white sharks, bull sharks, hammerheads and tiger sharks are regularly spotted in around Australia.
